Richard Henry Lea and Graham Inglesby Francis started the business in Coventry in 1895. They branched out into car manufacturing in 1903 and motorcycles in 1911.

In 1950 the 2½ litre Sports Roadster, with the more powerful 2½ litre engine, was introduced.
